Raees is set in the 1980s in Gujarat, a dry state. Raees Alam (Shah Rukh Khan) is a bootlegger who rises to become the king of the illegal liquor trade in the state. He is a shrewd businessman and a charismatic leader, but he is also ruthless and violent.
ACP Majmudar (Nawazuddin Siddiqui) is a police officer who is determined to bring Raees down. He is a brilliant investigator and a dedicated cop, but he is also corrupt and ambitious. Raees and Majmudar are two sides of the same coin. They are both powerful and ruthless men, but they have different motivations. Raees wants to make money and help his people, while Majmudar wants to bring criminals to justice.
The film explores the conflict between these two men and the different worlds they represent. It is a story of power, corruption, and the struggle for control.
Raees was banned in Pakistan for its portrayal of Muslims. The Pakistani censor board said that the film “undermines Islam, and a specific religious sect, (and) portrays Muslims as criminals, wanted persons and terrorists”. Despite the controversy, Raees was a commercial success. It was the third highest-grossing Indian film of 2017.
